Disabling Windows automatic updates

Category: Reliability
Item: OS Updates settings

Why should you care about them?

Windows updates are set to a non-optimal setting.

Updates can start downloading at an unpredictable time and cause hard to trace performance issues.

How can I check it?

  1. Go to Start, and search for “Windows Update settings”:

Finding windows update in the search bar.

  1. Go to “Choose how updates get installed”:

  1. Check if “Never check updates (not recommended)” is selected.

How to fix them?

  1. Change it to “Never check for updates (not recommended)”.
  2. Then periodically, during the maintenance window, run Win Updates and reboot. The best environments do this on a scheduled basis every month.

I love making performance tuning SQL Servers fast and making them more stable. And I channel that obsession into our SQL Managed Services and new content here. When I'm not writing about SQL, I spend time outside hiking, skiing, mountain biking, or trying a new recipe.
