The availability group failed over. The app didn't.
The listener moved, but connection strings, logins, or SQL Agent jobs were never set up on the new primary.
Always On availability groups, failover clusters, log shipping, replication, and backups you can restore. Our senior DBAs plan it, set it up, and fix it when it breaks, so business continuity on SQL Server doesn't depend on luck.

Most teams find out their failover plan has gaps while they're using it. These are the situations that bring teams to us.
The listener moved, but connection strings, logins, or SQL Agent jobs were never set up on the new primary.
A growing log send queue means more data at risk if the primary dies. A growing redo queue can lengthen recovery after a failover and put your RTO at risk.
Log shipping or seeding broke halfway, and now you need someone who knows which restore comes next.
Merge or transactional replication is slow, out of sync, or needs a reinitialize that runs all night.
Nobody trusts the failover enough to do rolling updates.
You have backups. You don't have numbers.
If one of those is happening right now, skip the rest of this page and call SQL Server Emergency Support. It runs 24/7/365 and is open to non-clients. Emergency retainer clients get a guaranteed 15-minute senior DBA response.
We work on the setup you already have or plan a new one. Every engagement is done by a senior DBA with 15+ years of hands-on SQL Server experience.
Planning, setup, and repair of availability groups: synchronous replicas for automatic failover, asynchronous replicas for a DR site, and listeners your applications reconnect to. Running Standard Edition? Basic availability groups give you two-node HA without Enterprise licensing. Still on database mirroring, which Microsoft deprecated in SQL Server 2012? We'll plan the move to availability groups. Our Always On availability groups guide explains how they work.
SQL consulting in a clustered environment: Windows Server Failover Clustering, shared storage, and clusters that fail over badly or not at all. We set up new SQL Server clusters and fix existing ones. Patching one? See our step-by-step guide to patching SQL Server Always On clusters.
The oldest DR method in SQL Server and still one of the most dependable. We set up warm standbys and automate the copy and restore jobs. One client's log shipping process used to break once or twice a week and wake the DBAs. After our work, it runs solid.
Replication help, from best-practice reviews and training to performance tuning when replication slows down. Replication is not an HA tool on its own, so we'll tell you when it is the wrong fix. More in 17 replication performance tips.
Backups to more than one destination (two backups is no backup), DR planning, and playbooks for the day you need them. If the plan only lives in one person's head, it isn't a plan. Why it matters: VM snapshots are not SQL Server backups.
Always On and disaster recovery for SQL Server in Azure and AWS, often planned alongside the move itself. Our SQL Server migration services use log shipping, mirroring, or Always On to keep the cutover window short.
There is no single right answer. It depends on two numbers: how much data you can afford to lose (RPO) and how long you can be down (RTO). Here's how the main options compare.
| Option | What it protects | Edition | Failover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always On availability groups | Individual databases, copied to other servers | Enterprise. Standard gets basic AGs (2 replicas, 1 database each, no readable secondary) | Automatic with synchronous replicas, manual to an async DR site |
| Failover cluster instance | The whole instance, including logins and Agent jobs | Enterprise. Standard supports 2 nodes | Automatic, but shared storage is still a single point of failure |
| Log shipping | Databases on a warm standby, fed by log backups | Standard and up | Manual. Data loss depends on the latest transaction you can recover after applying every available log backup, plus a tail-log backup if you can still take one |
| Replication | Selected tables, copied for reporting or distribution | Standard and up (most types) | Not built for failover |
| Backups plus restores | Everything, if the restore works | All editions | The last line of defense |
Many production setups combine two: an availability group or cluster for local HA, plus log shipping or an async replica for DR. For a longer comparison, read SQL Server high availability options explained and RPO vs RTO in disaster recovery.
No hoops, no gatekeepers. Five steps, and you see the plan before anything changes.
Tell us what you're running and what keeps you up at night. We scope the work and match you with the right senior DBA. Work can start as soon as the next day, depending on our schedule.
Your DBA runs our 145-point SQL Server Health Check. It reviews your failover and HA configuration, your disaster recovery readiness, and whether backups and restores are being tested. It is 100% read-only, with no downtime and no software left behind, and it is included with every consulting package.
We agree on RPO and RTO targets, pick the option that meets them, and check your licensing. With Software Assurance or SQL Server subscription licenses, qualifying passive HA and DR secondaries may not need their own core licenses, within Microsoft's limits, and that changes the math.
We make the changes or guide your team through them, following your change control, with your approval at every step.
You get a written summary of what we found, what we changed, and what's left to do.
A bad failover design is worse than none, because it gives you confidence you shouldn't have. That's why only senior DBAs do this work.
Every engineer on your environment has 15+ years of hands-on SQL Server experience. No juniors learning failover on your production servers.
No Oracle, no Postgres, no general IT. Microsoft SQL Server specialists, start to finish.
When HA and DR come with a migration or upgrade, every step has a documented undo, and your old environment stays intact until the new one is validated and you say go.
A written summary of what we found and changed, so your team isn't dependent on us.
We work remotely and follow your security policies and change control.
With SQL Server managed services, we get alerts when an availability group falls behind, changes role, or turns unhealthy, and when a backup chain breaks.
These quotes come from teams that run SQL Server where downtime costs real money.
Integrated Dermatology is the largest independent dermatology practice in the country, with over 1,800 facilities in 25 states, all tied into a single centralized server. When stability and performance issues hit, every location felt it. Red9 stabilized the environment. Then the client wanted to migrate from on-premises to Microsoft Azure, and its key objectives included implementing AlwaysOn and disaster recovery. All of the client's goals were achieved with only a few minutes of downtime, and the project was completed without any major interruptions or rollbacks.
"Designed our MS SQL Clustering and Disaster Recovery real-time solution, optimized stored procedures, fixed critical performance bugs, and set up monitoring for all servers with a new tool."
"Red9 implemented a project internally named 'NOT waking up the DBAs.' Results: great (I was one of them). Automated log-shipping pulls/pushes, reduced IO load on PROD; a process that used to break 1–2× per week and wake DBAs now runs solid."
"The biggest benefit has been performance gains tuning associated with migrating to AWS and a newer SQL Server with Always On clustering ... Red9 found inefficient indexes and bottlenecks resulting in over 400% improvement in latency."
"... our main go-to for server and performance issues; helps with DR and backups."
"We needed pointed training in replication best practices and performance tuning. ... My whole experience was excellent from start to finish."
Most HA and DR projects run as consulting. If something is down right now, or you want it watched long-term, pick one of the others.
HA/DR Consulting
Plan, set up, repair, or review your HA and DR setup. HA/DR projects are scoped and delivered through our consulting packages: buy a block of hours and use it for any SQL Server work. Hours never expire.
Emergency Support
Availability group down, cluster won't come online, database stuck restoring? Emergency Support runs 24/7/365 and is open to non-clients. Per incident, we work until it's fixed, and root-cause analysis is included. Retainer clients get a guaranteed 15-minute senior DBA response.
Managed Services
Ongoing coverage once it's running. Which plan fits depends on your setup. Basic availability groups with a passive secondary, and log shipping, start on Essentials. Readable-replica availability groups, failover clusters, and replication start on Professional. Two or more of those start on Enterprise. Every plan runs the same monitoring, including availability group alerts. Plans differ on how much hands-on DBA work is included.
Essentials and above carry a 15-minute emergency SLA.
It covers whatever your setup needs: planning a new high availability or disaster recovery setup, repairing one that fails over badly, or reviewing one nobody has looked at in years. That includes Always On availability groups, failover cluster instances, log shipping, replication, and backup strategy. Every engagement starts with our 145-point Health Check, and you get a written summary of what we found and changed.
High availability keeps SQL Server running through a local failure, like a server or a disk, usually with automatic failover in seconds. Disaster recovery gets you back after losing a whole site, a region, or the data itself, usually with a manual failover to a second location. Most businesses need both. Two numbers set the targets: RPO (how much data you can lose) and RTO (how long you can be down).
It depends on your RPO, your RTO, your SQL Server edition, and your budget. Availability groups protect individual databases and can fail over automatically. A failover cluster instance protects the whole instance but depends on shared storage. Log shipping is a simple, dependable DR copy with manual failover. Many environments combine two. We recommend one after the assessment, not before.
Yes. Since SQL Server 2016, Standard Edition supports basic availability groups (two replicas, one database per group, no readable secondary) and two-node failover cluster instances. Log shipping also works on Standard. For many teams that covers HA without paying for Enterprise.
Yes. Call SQL Server Emergency Support. It runs 24/7/365 and is open to non-clients. A per-incident engagement works until the problem is fixed and includes root-cause analysis. Emergency retainer clients, and managed clients on Essentials and above, get a 15-minute response SLA. Once you're back up, a consulting engagement can work on the design problems behind the failure to make a repeat less likely.
Both. Much HA/DR work is on setups that already exist: replicas that fall behind, listeners that don't reconnect, clusters that won't patch cleanly, log shipping chains that break. We find out why first, then fix it.
Yes. We help with SQL Server replication, from best practices and training to performance tuning. If replication is being used as a DR tool, we'll tell you whether an availability group or log shipping would do the job better.
Yes. We've set up Always On and disaster recovery for SQL Server in Azure and AWS, often as part of a migration. If you're moving at the same time, we plan HA and DR as part of the move.
Often not. With active Software Assurance or SQL Server subscription licenses, each licensed operating-system environment (physical or virtual) can run one passive replica for HA, one for DR, and one for DR in Azure without extra core licenses, as long as each passive replica needs no more licenses than the primary would. A passive replica can still run database consistency checks, log backups, full backups, and resource monitoring. Once a secondary serves reports or other client workloads, it needs its own licenses. Without Software Assurance or a qualifying subscription, every replica needs its own licenses. We check your licensing during the planning step.
HA/DR work is scoped and delivered through our SQL Server consulting packages. You buy a block of hours and use it for the assessment, the setup, and any other SQL Server work.
