CTPCommunity Technology Preview (beta release)
RCRelease Candidate
RTMReleased To Manufacturing; It is the original, released build version of the product, i.e. what you get on the DVD or when you download the ISO file from MSDN.
CUCumulative updates include all bug fixes and enhancements made since the last Service Pack release, which will also be included in the next Service Pack. The installation process for a Cumulative Update is similar to that of a Service Pack. However, Cumulative Updates are not fully regression-tested.
*Since January 27, 2016, Microsoft recommends the ongoing, proactive installation of SQL Server Cumulative Updates as they are released. SQL Server CUs are certified to the same standards as Service Packs and should be installed with the same level of confidence.
SPA Service Pack is a comprehensive collection of hotfixes that have been fully regression-tested. In some cases, it also includes product enhancements. All SQL Server Service Packs are cumulative, meaning each new Service Pack contains all fixes from previous Service Packs along with any new fixes.
*Starting with SQL Server 2017, Service Packs have been discontinued. Only Cumulative Updates (CUs) will be provided.
GDRGeneral Distribution Release; GDR fixes should not contain any of the CU updates.
QFEQuick Fix Engineering; QFE updates include CU fixes.
CVECommon Vulnerabilities and Exposures; publicly known information-security vulnerabilities.
ODOn-Demand hotfix. An OD is released per customer request for specific problem scenarios to that customer. OD hotfixes may or may not be released to the general public.
CODCritical On-Demand hotfix. A COD hotfix is defined as critical because security is impacted a severe stability or functionality is detected.

Red9 has incredible expertise both in SQL migration and performance tuning.

The biggest benefit has been performance gains and tuning associated with migrating to AWS and a newer version of SQL Server with Always On clustering. Red9 was integral to this process. The deep knowledge of MSSQL and combined experience of Red9 have been a huge asset during a difficult migration. Red9 found inefficient indexes and performance bottlenecks that improved latency by over 400%.
