How to Choose a SQL Server Managed Services Provider (and How 8 Providers Compare)

Updated November 2, 202613 min read

TL;DR

Red9 wrote this and is one of the 8 providers compared. Pick the SQL Server managed services provider whose facts fit your setup: how many database engines you run, who answers at night, what the response promise measures, and whether you can see a price first.

  • 2 of the 8 work only on SQL Server: Red9 and Straight Path Solutions. The other 6 also cover other databases or data platforms, such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL or Microsoft Fabric.
  • 2 post prices online: Straight Path (all four tiers) and Red9 (starting prices for two of its four plans). The other 6 post no prices on the pages we read.
  • Published response promises run from 15 minutes (Straight Path for P1 issues, Fortified Data for emergency calls, Red9 for high-priority issues on three of its four plans) to 2 hours (Red9's Monitor plan). Red9 also publishes a measured average: 7.3 minutes over the last 12 months.
  • Fortified Data, DataStrike and Straight Path say their DBA teams are US-based.

Provider facts checked October 31, 2026.

Full disclosure: Red9 wrote this, and Red9 is one of the 8 providers compared. We sell SQL Server managed services, so read this with that in mind. Every fact about another company comes from that company's own website, read on October 31, 2026, and the pages are named under each profile. The providers appear in alphabetical order with no ranking, and where another provider fits a situation better than Red9, we say so.

On October 31, 2026, both provider-written lists on Google's first page for "sql server managed services provider" put their author first. This one was written by a provider too, so instead of a ranking you get the questions we'd ask and the facts side by side.

What to ask a SQL Server managed services provider before you sign

1. Is SQL Server the whole job, or one database among many? If you run Oracle, PostgreSQL or MongoDB next to SQL Server and want one contract, a multi-database provider is the simpler choice. If SQL Server is all you run, a SQL Server-only shop is worth a look. Either way, ask how many of their DBAs work on SQL Server every day.

2. Who picks up at 2 a.m.? Ask how many years of SQL Server experience the person who takes the first call has. Then ask whether a junior triages the ticket before a senior DBA sees it.

3. What does the response promise measure? A written promise, such as "15-minute P1 response", is the most a provider commits to. A measured average shows what happened. Ask for both. Then ask what stops the clock: an automatic ticket reply, or a DBA working on your server.

4. Can you see the price before the sales call? In this comparison, 2 of 8 providers post prices, and only one posts every tier. Quoting is normal; it means you can't compare costs until you've talked to each one. Also ask what the price covers: a set number of hours, or any small task.

5. Where does the team work, and does it matter to you? Some contracts, regulators and boards require staff in one country. If yours does, ask the provider to put that in writing. If it doesn't, weigh location against the other five questions.

6. What can you check for yourself? Named clients, published case studies and the exit terms. Ask how you leave before you sign.

Every cell comes from the provider's own website, read October 31, 2026. "Not found" means we didn't find it on the pages we read. It doesn't mean the provider lacks it. If we missed something, tell us and we'll fix it.

Every DBA has 15+ years of SQL Server experience, and we have no junior DBAs. Senior DBAs are on call 24/7/365. Our response promise for high-priority issues is 15 minutes on the Essentials, Professional and Enterprise plans and 2 hours on Monitor. Our measured average response over the last 12 months was 7.3 minutes, as published on our Managed Services page. Starting prices for two of our four plans are on our SQL Server managed services page; the other two are quoted. Founded 2014; headquartered in Alpharetta, Georgia. Our DBA team is not all US-based. Where we're the wrong call: if you need Oracle, PostgreSQL or MySQL looked after under the same contract, we don't do them. And if your policy requires a team based only in the US, the providers in this list that state one are a better fit.

Straight Path Solutions. Straight Path works on SQL Server and says it is building PostgreSQL skills. It posts its prices: four quarterly tiers from $6,500 (10 hours) to $20,000 (75 hours), with a 15-minute P1 response SLA and 24/7/365 on-call access. On its DBA as a Service page it describes its DBAs as on-shore, full-time employees, with a dedicated lead DBA backed by a team, and says it has served 125+ teams since 2011. Mailing address: Sanbornville, New Hampshire.

Which provider fits which situation

Matched to what each provider says about itself:

  • You run several database engines and want one contract: Pythian, Datavail, DataStrike, Fortified Data and Rackspace all cover SQL Server plus Oracle and open-source databases. Red9 and Straight Path don't.
  • You're a large enterprise that needs global reach: Rackspace (5,800+ employees, 120+ countries), Pythian (offices in five countries) and Datavail (offices in the US, India, Colombia and Canada).
  • Your policy requires a US-based team: Fortified Data, DataStrike and Straight Path say theirs is.
  • Your data stack is SQL Server plus Power BI or Microsoft Fabric: Emergent Software runs them in one managed line. DataStrike also lists Power BI and Fabric work.
  • You want to see prices before a call: Straight Path posts all four quarterly tiers. Red9 posts starting prices for two of its four plans.
  • You want flexible hours instead of a monthly plan: DataStrike bills hourly with no rigid minimums. Emergent sells prepaid hours with no monthly commitment.
  • SQL Server is all you run, and response time matters most: Red9 and Straight Path both work only on SQL Server, and both promise 15 minutes on their most urgent issues (Red9 on three of its four plans). Red9 also publishes its measured average.

What these 8 have in common

All 8 say they offer 24/7 support in some form. So "24/7" on its own won't separate them. Questions 2 and 3 above will: who answers, and how fast they respond.

FAQ

Who are the biggest SQL Server managed services providers?

Of the 8 providers compared here, by their own numbers: Rackspace has 5,800+ employees and customers in more than 120 countries. Datavail calls itself one of the largest remote data services companies in North America, with 1,000+ data professionals and 300,000+ applications and databases monitored. Pythian lists offices in five countries. Size helps with global coverage. It doesn't tell you who will work on your server, so ask who takes the first call.

Is a managed database service the same as a managed services provider?

No. Azure SQL Managed Instance, Amazon RDS and Google Cloud SQL are products. The cloud vendor runs the servers underneath, plus automated backups and patching. A managed services provider is a team of DBAs who tune queries, fix blocking, plan capacity and answer when something breaks, on those products too. Many companies use both. More in Azure SQL Managed Instance: what you get and what it costs.

How much does a SQL Server managed services provider cost?

Two providers here post prices. Straight Path charges $6,500 to $20,000 per quarter for 10 to 75 hours of DBA time. Red9 posts starting prices for two of its four plans on its Managed Services page and quotes the other two. The other six post no prices on the pages we read, so expect a quote. Compare any quote with the full cost of hiring: our SQL Server DBA cost guide shows why salary is only part of it.

What response time should I expect?

Expect promises of 15 minutes to 2 hours. Straight Path promises 15 minutes for P1 issues, Fortified Data for emergency calls on Select, Signature and On-Call DBA, and Red9 for high-priority issues on three of four plans (2 hours on Monitor). Emergent promises 1 hour for critical incidents. The other four state no time in minutes or hours on the pages we read. Red9's measured average is 7.3 minutes over 12 months. Ask each provider what stops the clock.

Can a managed services provider work alongside my in-house DBA?

Yes, and it's common. Your DBA keeps the work they know best, and the provider covers nights, weekends, vacations and the tasks nobody has time for. Red9 often works in co-managed setups like this. Whoever you pick, write down who owns which tasks before day one.

Red9 has incredible expertise both in SQL migration and performance tuning.

The single biggest benefit has been performance gains and tuning associated with migrating to AWS and a newer version of SQL Server with Always On clustering. Red9 was an integral part of this process.… The deep level of knowledge of MSSQL is incredible and the combined experience and expertise has been a huge asset.… Red9 was able to find a number of inefficient indexes and performance bottlenecks that resulted in over 400% improvement in latency.
