SQL Migrations or Upgrades Services in Fremont

The key to successful SQL Server Upgrade and Migration projects is the proper prep work. This part of the work will probably take from 90 to 95% of your time. Here is a partial list of items we do during Fremont SQL Server upgrades and migrations - just to get your creative SQL juices going:

  1. Planning
  2. Analyzing of current production environment

    Agreeing on deadlines

How long is the allowed down time window for SQL Server Migration cut over

How Disaster Recovery site will be handled

    Analyzing of current production environment

    Agreeing on deadlines

How long is the allowed down time window for SQL Server Migration cut over

How Disaster Recovery site will be handled

Ordering new hardware for SQL Servers

  3. New SQL Server setup
  4. Migrating all components from old/current production
  5. Testing
  6. Setting up new environment and making sure all components work

Capturing old/current production workload and rerunning it in new environment

    Analysis errors and issues

Analyzing performance differences on old vs. new

    Addressing slowness and other issues

  7. Coordinating with the rest of the team involved
  8. Cut over
  9. Post cut over troubleshooting, monitoring and fixes

As you can see, there is a lot going on during any SQL Server Migration or Upgrade. Depending on your size, you may want to have a project manager assigned. If you are small, no need. If larger, it will help a lot. As SQL Server DBA can go get programmers to do things. And if you make your SQL DBA resource do it - let’s just say, you won’t be in his phone favorites list for long.

When you need to migrate or upgrade Fremont SQL Server, here are a few important things to think about:

  1. Decide if you want one to one migration, or if you want a new environment setup using all the best practices. The vast majority of upgrade/migration project s we have done go with the best practices method. And so far, it has been the right choice every time. We wouldn't let you go down the wrong route, don't worry.
  2. Do not cut preparation work short. Successful prep equals successful SQL migration or upgrade.
  3. How much downtime can you expect during SQL Server migration/upgrade? This is important to figure out at the start as this will drive the HOW part and your SQL DBA will choose appropriate method based on those parameters.
  4. What date migration will happen? Often dates change as you go, because another team can't deliver on time. But make sure when migration falls on major holidays - everyone who is a key person is available.
  5. When migrating SQL Server to cloud providers such as Amazon AWS EC2 or Microsoft Azure or any other cloud, test your disk performance. And be prepared to get really disappointed at sad cloud disk performance. If you were used to 1000MB/s or more in your on-premise SQL Server, cloud drives won't even come close (unless you have Department of Defense budget). There are ways to tweak it, but be prepared as it means extra work.
  6. When migrating SQL Server to, or from, a physical server to a virtual (some call it P2V SQL migration, physical to virtual or P-2-V), you should definitely use SQL consultants or DBA who have done this before. Ideally - they have done a variety of migrations/upgrades multiple times. Here are a few questions you can ask:
  7. How many complex SQL Server migration and upgrade projects have the service providers conducted successfully in the last 12-24 months?

How fast were they when it was necessary to migrate SQL in short notice?

What is the worst unplanned issue you ran into during your past SQL migrations or upgrade?

Have you bumped into any issues which turned out to be "unique", and how did they get solved?

Oh...and most importantly - were you the lead SQL DBA on this project, or was there someone else? Enough said...

  8. Figure out what to do about your disaster recovery site. Usually not a problem, but some companies have SLAs they have to meet, and SQL outage in DR site is a problem. So, you want to figure out how to minimize dramatic issues.
  9. Think through a roll-back scenario. It can happen. Just do it. Its better to think through with everyone involved now, rather than when everyone is exhausted at 4AM in the morning.
  10. Write down all the steps. And who will be doing what. And how long it will or should take. You want a large Excel or Project Plan with all the steps. Even the smallest. Believe us, a small number of items will simply blow you away. When you are done, and somewhere half way through you will be filling out our contact us form thanking us for this suggestion. You are welcome.

So now that you have a good start for migrating or upgrading your SQL Server database which resides in beautiful Fremont. And you can handle any SQL migration, physical to virtual (P2V or P-2-V), SQL migration to the cloud or to VMWare.

Significant Performance Improvement in minutes

In just a few minutes, Mark was able to find significant performance improvement opportunities in my database. These improvements were in areas I hadn’t even considered. Mark came up with many ideas; just the top 2 to 3 were enough to give us a significant performance boost. Mark has extensive knowledge when it comes to SQL Server. I can’t imagine there is anything he does not know. We plan to continue to work with him on a regular basis and continue to enjoy the benefits of his knowledge.

Rare… Penetrating Knowledge of SQL

What a rare, great feeling it is to know when you hand off a project to someone, you can sit back and simply expect the best possible outcome. Mark's cool confidence and eagerness to deliver results are surpassed only by his deep penetrating knowledge of SQL. Whether it's design, development, optimization, or recovery, Mark is a SQL Gem.

Complex and heavy 5,000+ concurrent connection databases need tuning, indexes, best practices, up-time, and smooth performance over all

Mark is an expert in large scale MS SQL Database environments which exceed 5,000+ concurrent connections. He has mastered the understanding of complex, heavy load TSQL transactions. When tuning, database structure, indexes, stored procedure, best practices, up-time, and smooth performance are all important, Mark is the type of DBA who truly knows how to keep these high standards. If you are growing, your feature sets are centered around MS SQL, then developers will benefit greatly from Mark's time to more efficiently write code. If you would like to sleep better at night and know your database will be running well in the morning, then I would recommend finding a DBA with the kind of skill set Mark has proven time and time again.

With little notice, Mark was able to find and fix a number of different SQL misconfigurations and wasteful practices. After a weekend of work, the customer realized a 60% decrease in CPU utilization as a direct result of Mark's work.

On an urgent SQL issue, Mark did a great job. Our customer moved their SQL environment from a rack solution with Fiber SAN to the Azure cloud. Doing this exposed all of the wasteful IO practices they had in their SQL environment. With little notice, Mark was able to find and fix a number of different SQL misconfigurations and wasteful practices. After a weekend of work, the customer realized a 60% decrease in CPU utilization as a direct result of Mark's work.

Whole experience was excellent from start to finish.

SQL Server Replication - expert and professional assistance. My whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Red9 was willing to accept a job a bit outside of normal; I was really looking for was someone to provide some expert advice to a novice SQL Server admin. I needed some pointed training in replication of best practices and performance tuning. I understand that teaching is quite a different skill set than actually performing the tasks yourself, so Red9's ability to convey his points clearly and tailor them to my level of understanding was impressive. Red9 was also responsive to my request for a follow-up, and did a very good job communicating when setting up meeting times. I would not hesitate to recommend Red9 to anyone who has a need for expert and professional assistance with SQL Server. My whole experience was excellent from start to finish.

Win Server 2008R blowing 53 error suddenly

Mark is UNBELIEVABLE! We had a server connection issue plaguing us for over 3 weeks. We had 2 so-called professionals trying to figure out what the problem was, and after 3 weeks they were still scratching their heads! I hired Mark to investigate this issue. Within ONE HOUR Mark honed-in on the actual problem; advised us on what needed to be done with the Server Hosting company, and then within 30 minutes we finally had access to the crucial data we needed to run our business! Anyone looking for a TRUE professional regarding SQL or SQL Server, don't even bother looking elsewhere; Mark is the exactly the guy you want and need!
